Introduction Hereditary Fructose Intolerance I~FI) began toO appear in ,the literature after Chambers and Pmj)t1 in H56 delscrilbed an aduLt with an idiosyncrasy to fruotose. Froesch, Prader and colleagues2, the following year, described, for .the 'first time the typical syndrome.o'f HP!. Since then, over one hundred patients have been described ['fOm around the world indicruting ,a wide distdbution ,o[ this genetic defect, except Israel. The frequency is estimated as 1:30,000 and it pfOIbaJbly has an autosomal recessiv:e pattern .of inheritance. ilt has been reported more commonly from Europe where ~he ,consumption of Isucrose containing foods ,alppears to be high. The syndrome has never been described among Nepalese children and for this reason, together with ,its rarity, difficulty in diagnosis and management among Gurkhas it was feltwol'thwhile recording Vhis family.

Human aldolase B cDNA detects a Pvu II RFLP in healthy individuals
CODING SEQUENCE: Human aldolase B gene (ALDOB). The gene is a single copy and its chromosomal location is 9q21.3-q32 MENDELIAN INHERITANCE: Demonstrated in one family. The mother and the son are heterozygotes, whereas the father is a homozygote. OTHER COMMENTS: Hereditary fructose intolerance is due to a lack of aldolase B activity in liver. Although we observed no 2.3 kb homozygotes, no sign o...
متن کاملA Novel Frameshift Mutation of the ALDOB Gene in a Korean Girl Presenting with Recurrent Hepatitis Diagnosed as Hereditary Fructose Intolerance
Hereditary fructose intolerance is an autosomal recessive disorder that is caused by a deficiency in fructose-1-phosphate aldolase (Aldolase B). Children can present with hypoglycemia, jaundice, elevated liver enzymes and hepatomegaly after intake of dietary fructose. Long-term intake of fructose in undiagnosed patients can result in hepatic failure or renal failure. We experienced a case of he...
متن کاملFructose-induced aberration of metabolism in familial gout identified by 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
The hyperuricemia responsible for the development of gouty arthritis results from a wide range of environmental factors and underlying genetically determined aberrations of metabolism. 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies of children with hereditary fructose intolerance revealed a readily detectable rise in phosphomonoesters with a marked fall in inorganic phosphate in their liver in viv...
متن کاملHigh liver glycogen in hereditary fructose intolerance.
A case of hereditary fructose intolerance is reported in a girl aged 2 years at the time of her death. She had apparently progressed normally until the age of 14 months. At 19 months she was admitted to hospital with failure to thrive, hepatomegaly, and superficial infections. Investigations revealed hypoglycaemia, persistent acidosis, aminoaciduria, and a high liver glycogen level which sugges...
متن کاملFatty liver disease and hypertransaminasemia hiding the association of clinically silent Duchenne muscular dystrophy and hereditary fructose intolerance
We report a case with the association of well self-compensated hereditary fructose intolerance and still poorly symptomatic Duchenne type muscular dystrophy. This case illustrates the problems of a correct diagnosis in sub-clinical patients presenting with "cryptogenic" hypertransaminasemia.
